Big Helyn's Saloon
About This Spot
Big Helyn's Saloon is the kind of neighborhood bar that gently pulls you into its easy rhythm the moment you step inside. Nestled on El Camino Real in San Clemente, it hums with a familiar warmth where stories are traded over chilled pints and laughter mingles with the clack of pool balls. The pace here is unhurried—comfortably laid-back during the day, while weekend evenings invite a livelier, spirited crowd eager to share in the communal buzz.
Stepping onto the back patio, you’ll find a quiet corner to catch your breath, enjoy a smoke, or simply watch the ebb and flow of regulars and visitors weaving in and out of conversation. The bartenders, steady and approachable, tend to each order with a friendly attentiveness that feels like checking in with an old friend. Whether you're nursing a classic Guinness or a refreshing, effervescent Michelada, drink choices complement the atmosphere rather than overpower it—part of the local rhythm.
The saloon’s charm lies not in polish but in its raw authenticity. It’s a gathering place where military personnel mix with locals, colors and characters creating a patchwork of patterns across the bar stools and dartboards. While the vibe can lean into rowdiness, especially when the weekend crowd arrives, there’s a clear sense of community beneath it all—a space where familiar faces are as important as the perfect shot at the pool table. This is a spot where hospitality comes wrapped in genuine human moments, a welcoming breath amid the Pacific Coast’s sun-warmed streets.

Nice little neighborhood bar. Very relaxed and friendly with a variety of colorful local characters.

A great local dive bar. One of the best in town. Mostly all men though. Never many women. At least during the day and happy hour. Can get a bit rowdy on the weekends. Lots of military guys drink there. Back patio is choice for a smoke break. Cleaned it up real good. Not many bars in this town have that amenity for their customers. Bartenders are great even to women patrons. Very cool. Nice pool tables.

This building was just your average bar, but the service and clientele were phenomenal!! I was in town visiting my son at Camp Pendleton for Thanksgiving. Jess didn't just give suggestions of a place to try and get reservations for Thanksgiving dinner, she called, got reservations set up, and made it happen for us. I instantly felt at home and made life long friends.

If you live in the south end of town and looking for a cold beer and some fun conversation this is the place. Great drink specials and it’s like a party every time i am there.

Massive fight amongst underage military personnel. Exactly what I signed up for! Same. This is what I wanted. What else do you expect for SC
